Tajie D, K-Town

Showing signs of being talented in music from a young age, Taj Dedrick (born August 14, 1991), Tajie D, beatboxed at the age one even though all he was doing was spitting all over himself. Both of his parents were involved in Bay Area music having hung out with local artists and were back up dancers for Ray Luv and Tupac Shakur. At age three Tajie was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that will keep him wheelchair bound and cause his muscles to get weaker the older he gets while also having respiratory problems. From his perspective he “… see[s] this disease as a gift not a curse. I truly believe I was handed this situation so I can show people that we all need to live life to the fullest no matter what situation we are in.”

It wasn’t until the age of 11 that Tajie grew fond of Hip Hop and R&B crediting 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” video for getting him hooked. Once in his teens he had written a piece titled “Who Is That” detailing his introduction into the Rap game and at the time his father had started a small indie label named Bonnie and Clyde Ent. After rapping his lyrics over the phone, his father added Tajie to the label and a year later he was recorded his first songs. At 17 he underwent life threatening surgery, though successful as staph infection collapsed his lungs. After being released two weeks later Tajie struggled with talking, eating, and drinking. Against doctor’s orders he started to record songs for his debut project.

Tajie’s career began to develop and with Cody Morlan, Preacher Man, they decided to start a Rap group named K-Town that’s named after their home town of Kelseyville. The duo recorded ten songs and started performing at birthday parties and talent shows. Seeing Preacher and Tajie have fun and getting good feedback, JD (Tajie’s brother) decided to get involved and start singing, rapping, and dancing. The three took Lake County by storm and won awards in Mendocino and Lake County. K-Town has released 4 albums and been going strong for six years.
