Sneek, Set To Explode

1988 was dubbed Hip Hop’s greatest year by Rolling Stone after 15 of the most notable Hip Hop albums were released and it was also the year that the music world was graced with the birth of soon-to-become genius Keke Hicks, Sneek, who was born on October 23, 1988. Born into a military family she had the opportunity to travel the world, from the United States to Japan, soaking in the vast culture music. As a young teenager she escaped a life threatening illness that left her without the ability to walk, talk, or feed herself. Doctors saw little hope and were confident she would be lucky to survive this horrific series of events. Some 15 years later she’s unscathed only baring a scar on her neck.

As a Christian, Sneek encountered resistance from her church community as she took an interest in mainstream Rap. The ideology of Rap music, on its surface, appeared to be contradictory to her spiritual foundation but under the surface became therapeutic. The passion for the genre and poetry rehabilitated her in ways doctors could never comprehend. The art of Hip Hop expression and the world of formal education are fully intertwined for Sneek.

In 2012 Sneek received her Bachelors of Art in sound arts from Ex’pression College and has evolved into a prolific songwriter, producer, lyricist, and self-proclaimed audio geek. With a musical influence ignited by her travels, the threads of Jazz and R&B will always be found weaved throughout her music. With an edgy and gritty sound it’s a reflection of Missy Elliot and Lady of Rage, yet her musicality oozes influences of Ice Cube, Dre, and Snoop. She’s opened for E-40, Lupe Fiasco, Miguel, and The Jacka.
