NIC Withoutda E, What Shapes My Mind

Jafad ‘Nic’ Mwamburi, NIC/E (pronounced NICE without the E), was born on January 21, 1988 in Nairobi, Kenya and in 1994 settled in Brooklyn, NY with his family after spending time in south east Asia. During his time in Brooklyn, he began attending private piano classes with music instructor John Gay where he learned to play classical music. He transitioned into playing mainstream music at the time by taking what he learned and playing back songs on the radio by ear.

Living in Kigali, Rwanda was an eye opening experience for NIC/E who had friends who suffered great losses during the genocide. It became a motivation for him to begin speaking for the people through his music. Around 2001 he found himself traveling back to New York where he began his 8th – 12th grade years at New York Military Academy in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Under the JROTC Program, NIC/E was groomed into being a strong influence to those around him along with giving him the insight on how to become a strong-respectful leader.

The academy was also where his lyrics began to take shape. Listening to great artists such as Bob Marley, Jay Z, Backstreet Boys, N’SYNC, New Kids On The Block, Frank Sinatra, Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, NAS, and many more, he began to raise his level of music by writing to not only be heard but also give great performance energy behind the songs for others to feed off of. NIC/E continues to elevate his talents as high as he can take it by creating songs that not only come from experiences, but give the supporters an idea of events that help shape his state of mind.
