K-Tek, Adversity Leads To Success


Former college student at Schoolcraft College majoring in music technology, Mr. Official K-Tek, Kwamena Gyapea Tekyi-Mensah, born July 9, 1988, was educated in the Detroit public school system and graduated from the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing arts (DSA). Rapping since the age 12 and teased growing up he found solace in the rapper Eminem who taught him that rapping could help heal emotional wounds. Using the spoken word art form as a therapy at first, K-Tek gradually began to love rap even more. He recorded his first song titled “Boy Cant Be Stopped” shortly after graduating middle school and went on an excursion exploring local recording studios.

After recording in a variety of studios, K-Tek found a home at Mo Master Productions where many of Detroit’s rappers recorded at including Eminem, D12, and Trick Trick. The outcome of the recording sessions was a demo that he sent to Shady Records’ A&R Dart. Though no contract was offered, K-Tek gained the pleasure of knowing his talent was acknowledged driving him to work harder. The next door he opened was with Slip-n-Slide Records’. He was presented with the opportunity to be a part of Slip-n-Slide Street, but the $500 fee was out of reach.

K-Tek has struggled in many ways during his rap career spending time and money on studio time, yet he shows no regrets. He’s proud because you can’t succeed in life without going through adversity.
