Ban On Cuban Cigars And Rum Lifted By President Obama

President Obama has lifted several sanctions on Cuba and one allow travelers to bring in cigars and rum. The Obama administration made the announcement of the change on Friday, October 14, 2016, to increase trade and travel with the communist island.

Obama said the ban was lifted in an effort to make “another major step forward in our efforts to normalize relations with Cuba.” He also added that it would help “make our opening to Cuba irreversible.”

Under the new rules, which go into effect next week, travelers can purchase unlimited quantities of Cuban rum and cigars in any country where they are sold as long as they are for personal consumption. However, you cannot order Cuban rum and cigars online and have them shipped to your home. Starting October 17, U.S. residents can import as many as 100 Cuban cigars and 1 liter of Cuban rum; the same limits that apply to alcohol and tobacco products from other countries.
